The Night
While Monica got ready at the Hôtel Madame Rêve, Zach stepped out for a “quick errand.” Then came a knock: a pink rose, and the first of six notes, written in his own words, just for her.
A Rolls-Royce Phantom carried her south. At the château, the notes led her room by room until the last one turned her back toward the Vestibule, where she looked into the Grand Salon and saw Zach.
The lights fell, and a night sky opened indoors. Hundreds of lights rose across the painted ceiling as illuminated aircraft crossed the room, releasing rose petals over the couple before turning them toward the gardens. Outside, drones rose over the parterres: first a heart, then a ring box, then WILL YOU MARRY ME? Zach knelt and asked her, in his own words. She said yes, and fireworks answered.
The drones re-formed into “Mi Amor” as Krug 2008 was poured. Together, Monica and Zach pressed the button to launch the second show.
The Challenge
Zach did not want a show playing behind his proposal. He wanted one that answered it. That meant solving four things.
A Show That Could Not Restart
Drones, aircraft, and pyrotechnics fire on cues that cannot be taken back. The couple could not rehearse, and the show could not wait for them. Every cue had to be set against what Zach and Monica would be doing at that second.
Five Months, Planned In Secret
The hard part was the secrecy, not the scale. Zach first wrote in January and proposed at the end of June, traveling beside the woman the plan was for. He could not take a call in the open or leave a note where she might find one.
A Window Measured In Minutes
Sunset was 9:56. Blue hour ran from 10:21 to 10:38, and the full moon rose at 10:48. The proposal was set for 10:34, four minutes before the last light and fourteen before the moon. Blue hour is not a preference. It is a window, and it does not move.
Scale That Had To Stay His
Everything large in this evening grew out of something small: one pink rose, six notes in his handwriting, and a question he wanted to ask himself. The production could get as big as the gardens allowed without the technology becoming the point.
How We Planned the Evening
01 · The Rose Trail From Paris
The trail began at the hotel with one rose and one note, then continued through the château room by room. Zach wrote the notes. We placed the roses, staffed the rooms, and set the pace so the clues warmed as she got closer to him. The last note sent her back to the Vestibule and told her to look straight ahead.
02 · A Room That Opened Onto The Sky
The Grand Salon was the hinge between the private trail and the outdoor proposal. Stars rose across the painted ceiling and two illuminated aircraft flew inside the room, releasing petals that carried the rose trail one step further before turning the couple toward the gardens. There was no audience. The aircraft were there to move two people.
03 · The Blue-hour Window
The full moon fixed the date and the date could not slip. Seventeen minutes of blue hour set the hour, and the proposal was placed inside it. The rose trail, the drive, the salon reveal, and the aircraft all had to deliver Monica to the garden axis on time, so Zach traveled separately and earlier, and Monica’s driver was told to take a scenic loop if she ran ahead.
04 · Cues That Fire Once
Drone operators, pyrotechnicians, pilots, camera teams, and planners worked from one running order with hard cues and soft ones. The first burst fired on her yes. The second show fired on a button Monica and Zach pressed together. Neither could be recalled, and everyone knew which cues belonged to the clock and which belonged to the couple. Live music played at dinner only; everything through the proposal and the fireworks was pre-set.
05 · Briefing In French, On Paris Time
Most of the vendors were briefed in French by Chantelle and Nadia, who kept the plan on Paris hours and reached Zach in the few quiet minutes his days allowed. Everyone knew what they needed to know before Monica arrived. The surprise belonged to her, not to the people producing it.
The Result
The candles held the ground. The fireworks took the sky, cue after cue matched to “Ordinary” by Alex Warren, over the long garden axis.
Then portraits through the great rooms with nobody else in them, La Grande Dame 2012 by Veuve Clicquot, the Yayoi Kusama edition, opened for the pop, and petals from some three hundred roses going up around them. The evening had opened with one pink rose in Paris. It closed with roses falling around them at Vaux.
Dinner followed in the Salon d’Hercule, laid for two by VT Events with two butlers and a live jazz quartet. It was not a reservation added to the end of a production. It was the second half of the evening.
The scale was extraordinary. The timing is what made it belong to the proposal: every major cue connected to something real — his question, her answer, or the button they pressed together. The production was enormous. For Monica it arrived one moment at a time.
The garden that holds a sky show
A show in the sky needs three things at once: distance from neighbors, a garden built on a single long axis, and a venue that will privatize completely. Vaux has all three, and Le Nôtre’s parterres give drones and fireworks a frame to be read against rather than a patch of dark.
The château’s public Candlelit Evenings light the grounds with close to two thousand candles through the season. On this night the same candlelight belonged to two people, with aircraft, drones, and two fireworks sequences above it.

Questions We Hear First
Can You Have A Drone Show And Fireworks At Château De Vaux-le-vicomte?
Yes, where the operator, the pyrotechnic team, the clearances, and the timing are confirmed together rather than added to each other.
For Monica and Zach, drones from Crystal Drones spelled the question over the gardens and Grand Final Fireworks ran two sequences after the yes.
A display of either kind needs open ground for launch and landing, a venue willing to privatize, and approvals that are ours to secure, not yours. Those decide whether a location is possible before anything is designed.
Can A Drone Show Be Timed To The Proposal Itself?
Yes, and it is a different build from a show that plays in the background.
The formations follow the sequence: a heart, a ring box, the question, then “Mi Amor” and two champagne flutes after the yes.
Timing a show to a live proposal means deciding in advance which cues fire on the clock and which fire on a person, then giving one operator the authority to hold. The couple never sees that decision. They see a sky that answers them.
What Happens If Weather Affects A Drone Show Or Fireworks?
Wind and visibility decide whether an aerial display can fly, and both are tracked to the hour on the day.
Monica and Zach’s night came in dry with a 10 km/h north-westerly, which is what let the aircraft, the drones, and the fireworks all fly on the same evening.
A backup running order is written before anyone travels, so the decision on the night is a choice between prepared options rather than an improvisation. Drones and fireworks have different limits, and they are assessed separately.
How Far Ahead Should We Plan A Production Like This From Abroad?
Several months, when the evening depends on shows, permits, and a fixed date.
Zach began five months out, and the full moon meant the date could not slip.
Most couples start with a call to Chantelle from wherever they are, then plan by WhatsApp and video while the team briefs vendors in French on Paris time. Shorter timelines work and often bring more flexibility on dates and vendors — the trade is scale.
